About the Project
Indigo River, as a subconsultant to Coastal Risk Consultants, analyzed Casa Marina Resort, a 100+ year old hotel property located in the Landmarked Key West Historic District, for risks posed due to flooding, hurricanes, climate change, and sea level rise in order to provide recommendations for flood protection measures and other resiliency strategies. The major risks identified included flooding from sea level rise, storm surge, and extreme precipitation events impacting the site, either separately or by some combination of events occurring concurrently.
Indigo River performed a desktop analysis of the building and surrounding site, which included a review of the existing and proposed plans, topographic surveys, FEMA flood maps, elevation certificates, and bespoke risk reports in order to identify risks and develop mitigation strategies. Indigo River also researched Florida Building Code, local building provisions, ASCE recommendations, and National (US Department of the Interior) and local (City of Key West Historic Architectural Review Commission) to determine any limitations, restrictions, or permitting requirements that would be imposed on the proposed solutions.
Following two site visits to the property and meetings with the ownership team and property management to determine feasibility based on the capability of the on-site staff, Indigo produced a Flood Protection Study Report, which included customized design-level flood risk-mitigation and resilience strategies as well as their corresponding high-level construction cost estimates. In addition to the architectural recommendations, which included structural modifications, renovations, and deployable flood barriers—emergency response considerations and operational and maintenance considerations were also included in the report.
